Nazywanie Kościoła „nowym Izraelem” jest fundamentalne dla całej współczesnej eklezjologii. Określenie to wyraża z jednej strony ciągłość dwóch wspólnot duchowych, a z drugiej, istotną nowość, wynikającą z pojawienia się Mesjasza. Ciągłość i nieciągłość tak ukształtowanej historii zbawienia spontanicznie prowadzi do pytania o sposób realizacji zbawczego zamysłu Boga. Jeżeli Bóg pragnie zbawienia wszystkich ludzi, to czy z konieczności realizuje się ono w dwóch różnych grupach stanowiących jeden lud Boży? Odpowiedź kryje się w wykazaniu, że elementy konstytuujące lud Izraela uwidaczniają się następnie w Kościele.

One of the main concepts in the contemporary ecclesiology is the idea of the people ofGod. This biblical term defi nes and expresses the existence of Israel as people with fi xed social forms and referring to the cult. People of Israel are the people of God. In the New Testament this defi nition is applied to the Church as the people gathered by Christ and given to God. On this basis the name “new Israel” is applied to the Church. The above article presents essential factors forming the concept of the people belonging to God, and then refers to similarities and differences between the Church and Israel as theological community. On this basis it tries to show the continuity in the existence of both peoples that lasts nowadays and is the implementation of redemptive plans of God to some degree.
