The paper questions the universality of cursing phenomenon. The author draws attention to the se-mantic diversity of the notion of curse and analyses possible causes of cultural differences in cursing, adducing the variety of taboo topics and also the cultural diversity of human emotions and their expres-sion. Finally, she describes speech acts characteristic to certain cultures in case of which the curses serve specific purposes and take on specific forms.
