Marcel Carné is an outstanding French film director and an exponent of poetic re-alism who was the most successful when he collaborated with a poet and scriptwriter Jacques Prévert. The film Children of Paradise which was premiered in March 1945 is their last successful undertaking, a kind of résumé, a perfect realisation of artistic vision both of the creators. The large-scale film which was produced in difficult conditions of German occupation is considered as an essential work of “the golden age” of French cinema. The Children of Paradise was soon called a cult film. There is a great balance between the film’s depiction of the society in the mid-19th century and a tragedy of the individuals, a unique atmosphere of the story full of eroticism and crime, an appropriate balance between the real and the fictional characters, unprecedented splendour of scen-ery and costumes and particularly the splendid cast. All this makes the work timeless. The mystery of everlasting appeal of the Children of Paradise is connected with the structure of the film based on the principles of classical melodrama.

Marcel Carné, wybitny francuski reżyser i przedstawiciel realizmu poetyckiego, największe sukcesy odniósł we współpracy z poetą i scenarzystą Jacques’em Prévertem. Komedianci (Les Enfants du paradis, premiera w marcu 1945) są ich ostatnim udanym przedsięwzięciem, swoistym podsumowaniem, doskonałym urzeczywistnieniem wizji artystycznej obydwu twórców. Zrealizowany z ogromnym rozmachem w niesprzyjają-cych warunkach niemieckiej okupacji film jest uważany za kluczowe dzieło okresu zwanego „złotym wiekiem” francuskiego kina. Komedianci szybko zyskali miano filmu kultowego. Doskonale zachowana równowaga między obrazem społeczeństwa połowy XIX wieku i dramatem jednostek, niezwykły klimat opowieści nasyconej erotyzmem i zbrodnią, wyważone proporcje między bohaterami rzeczywistymi i fikcyjnymi, fres¬kiem społecznym i kameralnością sytuacji, niespotykany wcześniej przepych dekoracji i kostiumów, a zwłaszcza znakomicie dobrana obsada zagwarantowały temu dziełu ponadczasowy sukces. Tajemnica nieprzemijającej atrakcyjności Komediantów leży także w strukturze filmu, opartej na zasadach klasycznego melodramatu.
