The author has followed the main stages in the history of the State Archives of the Brest Province in Brest, from 1940 to the early 21st century. He points to considerable losses in archive documents for 1941–1944 during the German occupation, and stresses the huge effort made to systematise and carry out a technical-scholarly analysis of the surviving documents over the post-war decades as well as the significance of partial declassification of the documents in 1955–1958, 1988–1991 and the post-Soviet period. When examining the most important items, the author assessed the condition of documents kept in the Archives and concerning the central and regional governments, institutions, political parties and social organisations, not only in the Polesie Province, Baranovichi District and Navahrudak Province, but also in other provinces and districts of inter-war Poland.
