Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie poglądów średniowiecznego bibliofila Richarda de Bury’ego na problematykę ochrony i udostępniania księgozbiorów. Zaprezentowano sylwetkę biskupa de Bury’ego, okoliczności napisania przez niego traktatu łacińskiego pt. Philobiblon oraz stan badań na ten temat. Omówiono głoszone przez autora tezy dotyczące właściwego obchodzenia się z książkami. Wykorzystując cytaty z dzieła, wskazano problemy, na których się skupił. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na jeden z rozdziałów traktatu – Pożyteczne przepisy w sprawie wypożyczania ksiąg uczącym się, w całości poświęcony zagadnieniu udostępniania zbiorów szerszemu gronu odbiorców. De Bury opisał w nim regulamin średniowiecznej biblioteki, którą planował utworzyć w Oksfordzie. W artykule podkreślono uniwersalność i nowoczesność poglądów autora Philobiblonu na temat wartości, ochrony i udostępniania zbiorów. Poglądy te są w dużej mierze aktualne i dzisiaj.

The purpose of the article is to present the opinions of a medieval bibliophile, Richard de Bury, about the problems of the protection and the making accessible of book collections. There is a presentation of bishop de Bury’s figure, the circumstances in which he wrote the Latin treatise entitled Philobiblon and the state of the art on this subject. His theses about the appropriate handling of books are discussed. By using the quotations drawn from his work, one indicated the problems which were the subject of the author’s particular focus. Particular attention was directed to one of the chapters of the treatise (Useful regulations in reference to the lending of books to students), which de Bury devoted exclusively to the problem of the making accessible of collections to a wider group of recipients. In this chapter he described a body of regulations of a medieval library which he planned to establish in Oxford. The result of the considerations will be associated with the indication of the universality and the innovative nature of the opinions of the author of Philobiblon on the value, protection and the making accessible of collections, whose bulk continues to be relevant to this day.
