Autorka przy budowaniu hasła popiół korzysta z następujących poświadczeń językowych: frazeologizmów, ballad, pieśni zalotnych i miłosnych, pieśni pogrzebowych, baśni i legend. W języku polskim słowo popiół obok podstawowego znaczenia ‘to, co zostaje po spaleniu, jasnoszary proch, miałki i lekki’, ma znaczenie ‘doczesne szczątki człowieka, prochy ludzkie’. Popiół jako pozostałość po spaleniu bądź rozkładzie jest powszechnym symbolem śmierci, zniszczenia. Przez swe podobieństwo do prochu/pyłu/ziemi jest symbolem zmartwychwstania, odrodzenia do nowego życia. Symbolizuje los człowieka, krótkość życia, śmierć, żałobę, zmartwychwstanie, grzech, pokutę, skruchę, oczyszczenie.

The author, when designing the entry for the word popiół [ash(es)], uses the following linguistic sources: phraseologisms, ballads, courtship songs and love songs, funeral songs, tales and legends. In the Polish language, the word popiół [ash(es)], apart from the basic meaning, i.e. 'light-grey, light and light-grained powder that is left after something has been burnt', has the meaning of 'mortal remains of a human being, human ashes'. Ash as something that remains after something has been burnt or has decomposed is a universal symbol of death, or destruction. Due to its similarity to dust/soil is the symbol of resurrection, the rebirth to a new life. Ash symbolizes human fate, the shortness of life, death, mourning, resurrection, sin, penance, remorse, and purification.
