The work contains a synthetic picture of education in Vietnam from ancient to modern times and comprises the latest available literature of the subject. In the context of a briefly outlined historical and cultural development of the country, three educational systems that emerged in Vietnam have been presented: feudal, colonial and folk. In each of them, to some extent, one can find reflects of the influence of the three great philosophical-religious systems of Far East: Confucianism, Taoism and Zen Buddhism. Shaped in this way, patterns of thinking and canons of behaviour of the Vietnamese can also be found nowadays, even among Vietnamese children and families living in Poland and children in Polish-Vietnamese families as well. Following its own way of political transformation, Vietnam places a great emphasis on education system, increasing and diversifying number of schools on each educational level and financial expenditure on education. Proceeding democratization of the country makes it more and more open to influence of Western culture, but at the same time exposes traditional values to danger of disintegration. That points out the necessity of cultivation of them in contemporary Vietnamese education, which seems to be seen by the policy-makers.
