There are many obstacles that national literature must overcome to enter and be present in a foreign culture. The majority of people see the real challenge in the language of foreign literature. They find it an impossible task to master that language so that they can read it effortlessly. The only remedy, then, is to get to know that literature in translation – into either a foreign reader’s native tongue or English, if s/he adopted this lingua franca of today effectively. The teaching of foreign literature also involves other problems or difficulties: the phenomenon of cultural duality, excessive popularization, the availability of translated texts, and – which is the case with Polish literature – its preoccupation with public issues and its inclination to record collective experiences. Czesław Miłosz, the poet who taught Polish literature abroad, observed aptly that the recording of those experiences is the real limitation and the reason why Polish literature is not well known outside Poland. Therefore, in the process of teaching it is recommended to make use of such qualities of Polish literature as its precursory character and universality.
