The purpose of this article is to depict the grammatical form which is the vocative. In the first part of the paper I will review some of linguistic theories regarding this grammatical case, including the conceptions that pay special attention to the functional diversity of vocative. The starting point for my own analysis will be the philosophy of dialogue represented by Ferdinand Ebner, Franz Rosenzweig, Emmanuel Levinas and a major exponent of speech thinking or dialogicism, Martin Buber. The distinction made by Martin Buber between the two ‘basic words’, ‘I-Thou’ (Ich-Du) and ‘I-It’ (Ich-Es), correspond to the divergence between nominative and vocative: when you replace the nominative with the vocative, using Buber’s terms, the characters’ relationships move from an ‘I-It’ to an ‘I-Thou’ relationship. The vocative's presence puts both me and my interlocutor in „dead end”, in point of no return: the use of the vocative case closes us on objectification and reminds us of the uniqueness of the Other. The vocative is the 'spoken word' through which we enter into actual relations.
