Starzenie się społeczeństw stało się problemem globalnym i dotyczy większości państw na świecie, a zwłaszcza państw wysoko rozwiniętych. Do 2050 r. średnia długość życia ludności na świecie zwiększy się o prawie osiem lat. Świadczy to o dużym postępie społecznym, ale też rodzi określone problemy. Dane demograficzne dostarczają bardzo istotnych informacji, które powinny być podstawą do planowania działań zdrowotnych, opiekuńczych i aktywizujących. Największy ciężar opieki nad starzejącymi się rodzicami przejmują zazwyczaj kobiety. Już współcześnie coraz częściej podkreśla się trudną sytuację grupy określanej mianem sandwich generation, która „uwięziona” została w oczekiwaniach i pomocy dla dorosłych dzieci i starych rodziców. W artykule nawiązano do problemów demograficznych świata oraz kluczowych definicji aktywnej starości i starzenia. Pilotażowe badania dają obraz trudnej sytuacji pokolenia sandwich generation oraz są przyczynkiem do dyskusji na rodzące się problemy społeczne.

Aging is a global problem and affects most countries in the world, especially developed countries. It should be noted that by 2050 the average life expectancy of the world population will increase by almost eight years. This shows great social progress but is causing problems. Demographics provide information that should be the basis for planning health, care and activating activities. The greatest burden of caring for aging parents take the women. Already today highlights the plight of the sandwich generation group that helps adult children and old parents. The article addresses the demographic problems of the world and the key definitions of active aging. Studies show the difficult situation of sandwich generation and contribute to discussion in social policy.
