The establishment of the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences was greeted with many critical opinions. The presentation of the current list of laureates indicates that their research area is very wide and goes beyond economics in the strict sense. This results in the difficulty to create a clear classification of laureates into fields of knowledge. This paper includes a discussion of the main achievements of Noble Prize winners and investigates the influence of their studies on contemporary economic thought, against the background of the history of the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences.
