In this article the author discusses the Polish translation of Wat eene moeder lijden kan (What a mother has to suffer) by Hendrik Conscience, published in 1856. Due to a series of changes in the Polish translation the Polish text became different from its original. The question is how important those differences are and if they have a significant influence on the meaning of the text. The author’s assumption is that the Polish translator Franciszek Salezy Dmochowski tried to adjust the text to local, Polish circumstances, according to ideas about translation which were widespread in the 19th century. As a result, the process of ‘localization’ played a major role in the creation of Cierpienia matki, the Polish translation of Wat eene moeder lijden kan.
