The article examines the work of the French performance artist ORLAN in the context of contemporary artistic projects operating on the margins of art and biology. Transforming herself into a unique object/subject of public debate, always in opposition to something or between something — classic perception of beauty in Western European culture, transhumanism, eugenics, plastic surgery — ORLAN is presented here as a prophetic visionary, whose projects, consistently moving from performance to bioart, herald a new direction in the development of art.
