The present reports is an introduction to the discussion and signals, in general terms, some essential values of the reconstructed object. The literature on problems under discussion is very scarce. By way of an example one should however mention a number of works and articles the authors of which do not discuss problems of the values of the reconstruction but refer to them from historical, aesthetic and ethical aspects. As a conservator-practitioner and a scientific-didactic worker the author of this report thinks that the reconstruction process possesses values based not only on economic and practical premises. One can distinguish at least four different aspects inherent in defining the values of the reconstruction : historical, technical and technological, artistic and aesthetic, and finally emotional aspects. To a bigger or smaller extent, each of these values exists independently. At the moment of the formation of an reconstructed object historical values practically do not exist. They will emerge and grow in the course o f time. Still, modern reconstructions are the expression of a flexible view on historical values and record modern historical awareness and as such they are subject to the valuation. Technical and technological values can largely be obtained through a faithful repetition of the technique of the original and through a proper choice of the material. This accentuates the value of the reconstruction but does not equal the original work. Artistic and aesthetic values are relatively the easiest to restore, although, of course, not in absolute terms. We know of many instances of masterly performed reconstructions, or at least at a good level. Artistic and aesthetic values enable a proper perception of the reconstructed object and increase its emotional values. Emotional values are associated with artistic and aesthetic values and are a reminder of historical values. They give rise to specific experiences : national, patriotic, religious and even personal. These experiences are also conditioned by the place, size and functions of the reconstruction. Emotional values belong to fundamental reasons for which reconstructions, different in respect of plastic and technical aspects, are performed. The problem of the values of the reconstruction is complex and therefore a number of criterions might be employed in their appraisal.
