Współczesna urbanistyka obejmuje wiele wzajemnie zazębiających się zagadnień, w tym odniesienie zarówno do struktury przestrzeni (głównie miejskiej), jak i do procesów jej kształtowania (obejmujących zarówno kwestie projektowe, planistyczne jak i realizacyjne). Jednocześnie w kontekście gorącej obecnie dyskusji na temat tzw. deregulacji zawodu urbanisty powraca pytanie o istotę tej „nauki o mieście” oraz o rolę osób wykonujących tę profesję w procesie kształtowania przestrzeni. W konsekwencji czeka nas konieczność redefinicji samego zawodu urbanisty jak i określenie kształtu przyszłej doktryny urbanistycznej. Kwestie te nie pozostaną także bez wpływu na przyszły model kształcenia specjalistów zajmujących się kształtowaniem przestrzeni miast.

The article deals with the future of the profession of the „urban planner” – which at present is (at least in Poland) over-dominated by the role of „regulatory planner” serving the needs of the local community. This comes from the fact that – within the present planning system in Poland – “urban planning” profession is limited to the issue of developing urban regulatory plans, frequently named as “spatial plans”. But since the regulations regarding the ability of undertaking the career in this area have recently been significantly relaxed (thanks to the socalled deregulation process) the nature of this profession has to be examined and redefined. Within this discussion the issues of the complexity of “urban planning” science and practice are analyzed and basic trends in this matter are described. At the same time the issue of contemporary “urban planning doctrine” is tackled, which includes key urban development principles (coming from the sustainable development paradigm), key planning methods that shall be employed in the process of shaping cities and – finally – key modes of involving stakeholders in this planning decision-making process. All of these lead to the conclusions regarding the necessary changes in education in this field.
