W XVIII wieku relacje dyplomatyczne pomiędzy Hiszpanią a Rosją przybrały charakter trwały, a od 1761 roku hiszpańska ambasada w Petersburgu funkcjonowała w sposób ciągły. W okresie od 1727 do 1808 roku na placówce w Petersburgu (Moskwie) pracowało 26 hiszpańskich dyplomatów, w tym 13 szefów oraz 13 sekretarzy poselstwa. Ich pochodzenie społeczne, formacja oraz przygotowanie do służby stanowią główny przedmiot rozważań niniejszego tekstu. Autorzy stawiają tezę, że dyplomaci pracujący w Rosji są typowymi przedstawicielami osiemnastowiecznego korpusu dyplomatycznego.

In the 18th century diplomatic relations between Spain and Russia became constant and from 1761 the Spanish embassy in Saint Petersburg operated on a continuous basis. In the period between 1727 and 1808 there were 26 Spanish diplomats working in the diplomatic posts of Saint Petersburg (Moscow), including 13 heads and 13 secretaries of the Spanish diplomatic mission. The social background, education and preparation for duties of the aforementioned personnel are the key issues tackled in the paper. The authors postulate that Spanish diplomats in Russia were typical representatives of the 18th century diplomatic corps.
