The year 1941 was crucial for the hostilities in Europe during the Second World War. The changes connected with reshuffling of the allies at that time were the outcome of the attack of the Germans and their allies eastwards. The region of the present Podkarpackie Province saw the bloodiest conflict in the history of humankind. This article, based on relevant literature and archival sources, is supposed to present the events of 1941 on both sides of the river San, where the military activities on the eastern front started as part of the Fall Barbarossa. Towns like Przemyśl and Sanok had been imprinted in the memory of German, Slovakian and also Soviet soldiers, who had fought here since 22 June 1941. What is well remembered from that period is also the presented in the article Soviet fortification system later called the Molotov Line.
