Artykuł poświęcony jest konceptualizacji badań w ramach projektu badawczego Trendy rozwojowe Mazowsza. Omówiono w nim główne cele projektu. Przedstawiono znaczenie programu z punktu widzenia formułowania polityki rozwoju Mazowsza. Zarysowano w nim także główne uwarunkowania i cele rozwoju regionu. W artykule omówiono zakres znaczeniowy terminu „przestrzeń”, wskazując na związki i relacje z innymi dziedzinami, jak gospodarka i społeczeństwo, które to dziedziny będą także przedmiotem studiów w ramach programu. Omówiono również skrótowo, w kontekście konceptualizacji planowanych badań, problem relacji między regionem Mazowsza a Warszawą oraz pozycję Mazowsza w strukturze regionalnej kraju. Przedstawiono hipotezy badawcze oraz opisano w dyskusyjnej formule sugerowane główne obszary badań. W artykule krytycznie odniesiono się do wstępnych założeń programu. Zakwestionowano m.in. poprawność traktowania środowiska przyrodniczego jako bariery rozwojowej. Wskazano na konieczność uwzględniania w badaniach wymiaru przestrzennego rozwoju, także kontekstu społecznego i gospodarczego. Przedstawiono sugestie metodologiczne dotyczące m.in. badania konkurencyjności Mazowsza.

The article addresses the problems of conceptualization of research activities under the research Program “The development trends of Mazovia Region”. The main goals of the program are presented in the article. The program is also described from the perspective of the regional development policy formulation. The term “space” is being interpreted in the context of relations and connections with two other themes: “economy” and “society”, which are also the subject of investigation under the Program. In the context of conceptualization of research activities relationships between the region of Mazovia and the City of Warsaw are briefly discussed. The role and position of the Mazovia Region in the system of Polish regions is outlined. Research hypothesis are presented and main research areas are suggested. The article presents critical approach to initial assumptions of the research Program “The development Trends of Mazovia Region”. Among others, an approach to conditions of natural environment as a barrier for development is questioned. The article points out that there is a necessity to incorporate into studies of spatial aspects of development two more dimensions: social and economic. There are also some suggestions concerning methodology of projected studies, among others studies of competitiveness of the Mazovia Region.
