W niniejszym artykule podjęłam próbę porównania obrządku pogrzebowego dwóch sąsiadujących ze sobą społeczeństw wczesnego średniowiecza. Celem analizy było zebranie podobieństw oraz różnic w sposobie traktowania zmarłych przez zachodnich Bałtów oraz Słowian zamieszkujących Pomorze. Opisałam kryteria wyboru miejsca chowania zmarłych, rozmiary i długość funkcjonowania nekropoli oraz wyposażenie grobowe w obu kulturach. Zajęłam się także kwestią przedmiotów importowanych oraz rodzajem obrządku pogrzebowego. Zwróciłam uwagę na zjawiska typowe dla poszczególnych obszarów – pochówki końskie w kulturze zachodnich Bałtów oraz strefa bezpochówkowa, pochówki częściowe oraz groby typu Alt Käbelich występujące na Pomorzu. Następnie porównałam powyższe zagadnienia w zestawieniu końcowym. Analizując wszystkie podobieństwa i różnice dotyczące obrządku pogrzebowego omawianych kultur, podjęłam próbę wyjaśnienia genezy zaistniałych zjawisk.

In this paper I made an attempt to compare the burial practices of two neighbouring societies of the early medieval period. The aim of this analysis was to gather similarities and differences in the way the dead were treated by the Western Balts and Pomerania-inhabiting Slavs. I described the criteria for choosing place of burial, the size and length of operation of necropolises, as well as grave goods in both cultures. I also addressed the topic of imported items and type of funerary ceremonies. I paid attention to finds common to both regions - horse burials in the culture of Western Balts in addition to non-burial sphere; partial burials as well as Alt Käbelich-type graves present in Pomerania. Subsequently I compared the above-mentioned issues in the final summary. Having analysed all the differences and similarities regarding the funerary practices of the cultures in question, I made an attempt to explain the origin of the phenomena.
