At the beggining of his paper the author describes a road network of Polish lands at the time of Poland’s partitions until 1819 and shows first steps in training roadmen and organizing state services of highway department. The turning point was the establishment on June 10, 1819 of the General Board for Roads and Bridges of the Kingdom of Poland. One of the first roads which in 1819—1823 received hard surface was the Brest route, 198 km long, running from Warsaw via Minsk Mazowiecki — Siedlce — Międzyrzecz Podlaski — Biała Podlaska — Terespol to Brest. The author describes the construction of the road and gives an interesting historic account of design work, work organization and constructional techniques as well as of traffic regulation on the route. O f grea t interest is also the construction of monuments erected in W arsaw and Terespol to commemorate the effort of the constructors of the route (still existing and protected by roadmen). In a very interesting way the author describes the history of the Brest route in different historic periods (1823—1918, 1918-1939, 1939-1944, 19 44-1984) and lists all constructional changes and modifications of its course. It can be gathered from the article th a t despite major constructional modifications today’s international highway E-8 on the route Warszawa—Siedlce-Terespol runs road traffic on an unchanged historic course of the Brest route, opened for the public use in 1823.
