The 17th-century poet Joost vanden Vondel is a playwright who let resound womanly voices. In his Brethern he gives the floor to figures, women, who are absent or keep silent in the Bible. He revises the common known biblical text and thus modifies the authority the Bible enjoyed generally. He brings about new perspectives by reading the story of 2 Samuel 21 against the grain and situates women as subjects in the created space. The play develops a history in which as well the divinity of God’s demand as the authority of king David are revealed in a new perspective.
