The paper analyses Polish equivalents of linguistic hedges (Lakoff 1973), expressions such as jakby (as if ), swego rodzaju (a kind of ), około (approximately), faktycznie (in fact), typowy (typical), used to make the meaning of a vague expressions fuzzy. Basing on a short overview of how the term vagueness is used in philosophy of language and linguistics, the author reflects on the use of linguistic hedges. They differ significantly regarding their form and meaning; their common denominator is a reference to the presence of a speaker and a comparison between what is being spoken of and something else, more exemplary, better known. When considering truth in linguistics and responsibility for words, a need emerges to distinguish, from among the analysed units, the ones which serve as ‘operators of hedging’ that express the uncertainty of a speaker regarding the use of a given word (the ‘meta-uncertainty’).
