This article examines the influence of the work of three selected American writers (John Muir, Robinson Jeffers and Edward Abbey) on environmental movement. Thus, it directly addresses a link between literature and environmentalism that has been sometimes discussed in rather general terms. It documents the interface between the literary representation of the landscapes of the American Southwest and the campaigns and movements intent on their preservation. Moreover, it analyzes the evocative and transformative potential of three selected metaphorical frames widely used by the authors: the biblical, the anatomical, and the wild.
