Dębnik limestone is a decorative sculpture material used for the execution of many valuable architectonic objects and sculptures. Its characteristic feature, however, is low resilience to the impact of atmospheric factors and in particular to SO2 contained in the air. In the presence of moisture and with the catalytic participation o f compounds found in polluted air, SO2 reacts with the main component o f the limestone — СаСОз, creating a white gypsum deposit on the surface. Heretofore applied waxes and the Cosmolloid 80H micro- wax have not provided effective protection against damage caused by sulphur oxides. Consequently, research has been initiated on protecting the limestone with new micro-waxes which melt in a temperature of 90°C., their modifications with polyethylene waxes and other agents for the protection o f marble advertised by Akemi, Remmers and Syremont. The author describes the appearance of the surface after their application and the tests for their resistance against the impact o f SO2 and SO3 in closed corrosion chambers. Research as shown that the best protective coatings, resistant to aggressive factors, have been obtained by using micro-wax which melts in a temperature o f 91°C, Steinsiegel Seldenglanz by Akemi, Funcosil А-G by Remmers and Aleogard PF and CO by Syremont.
