This paper attempts to outline the process how a self-helping organization, set up by wounded WWII veterans, succeeded to shape a distinct identity within the confines of a totalitarian political system. Identity and self-perception of the Wounded Veterans’ Society had primarily one objective: it served to justify the decisions of the past and give them significance. All this primarily focused on the defense of traditional values and the consequences hereof. We can suppose, that the ZIW’s identity was shaped by three main forms of activity: joint action, mutual succour and representation. Additionally to these activities the society’s identity was grounded in the common frame of mind of old brothers-in-arms who shared the collective experience of war and army-life, as well as the struggle with everyday’s problems. The analyses is based on documents which date from the period after 1979 and are property of the ZIW.
