The subject of the article is an analysis of surnames from the Registers of new burghers of Poznań (1575–1793). Its historical source is a kind of document showing various processes which took place in the urban organism, e. g. admission to citizenship of those people who had satisfied special demands. It also testified to the social status of those people who contended about the citizenship of Poznań. In connection with the onomastic data it allows to us? the social structure of the city. In my analysis I use the onomastic method (etymology-motivational approach to onims) and sociological theories describing the urban phenomenon (the conventional school in analysis, the model of concentrational zones and the wedge model). I compared these data with the information about the social status of the middle class, which was given directly in the source; the sort and number of special descriptions expressing position in society typical of every social status e. g. ingen(u)us, nobilis, generosus, spectabilis – for noble men, providus, honestus, honoratus, famatus, uczciwy – for middle class, excellens – right for the clergy. I also made use of the data about common professions. The research points out typical anthroponomical forms of surnames for does not enable us to every state with precision. Arrangement of the structure of characteristic surnames of the middle class is not possible/is impossible. It is only possible to show onymic tendencies for that group of people: surnames formed from ordinal words, from the foreign onomastic system and from simultaneously balanced numbers of patronymic structures (-owicz/-ewicz) or those which hsve the -ski suffix.
