Abstracts

Emil Godlewski sen. was born in 1847 in Krasocin (near Kielce), and he died in 1930 in Kraków. He devoted his scientific activity mainly to plant physiology, which in that time started the development on the world as a modern science. Julius Sachs (plant physiologist) and Edward Strasburger (cytologist and embryologist) – splendid scientists who worked in Germany were regarded as his masters. All his long life Godlewski led intensive scientific, organizational and teaching activities. E. Godlewski is an author over 220 publications. This creativity contain 62 original scientific publications, among which 43 are physiology of plants works mostly experimental, others connected with agricultural sciences. Godlewski’s publications were known in science and bring him international recognition. His works were published in periodic such as: „Arbeiten des Botanischen Instituts in Würzburg“, „Flora“ (Regensburg), „Botanische Zeitung“, „Pringsheim’s Jahrbücher für Wissenschaftliche Botanik“, „Biologisches Centralblatt“, „Botanisches Centralblatt“, „Anzeiger der Akademie der Wissenschaften in Krakau“. Godlewski’s research current scientific problems of plant physiology. He interested in many physiological processes: photosynthesis, respiration, growth, etiolation, metabolic transformations of proteins, nitrification, water transport and tropisms. Some of his works were pioneering (e.g. experiments on plants and lichens respiration). Godlewski is remembered in science as an author original research methods, and as a creator of the physiological instruments (e.g. apparatus for plants respiration). Godlewski was active member of Academy of Arts and Sciences, he worked in Class III Mathematics and Nature. He created own scientific school which had large significance for plant physiology development in Poland. In this school he educated many young scientists. His scholars continued professors scientific work in significant research institutions. Godlewski led didactic activities for many students generations in Chair of Botany of Jagiellonian University (1873–1974), Lwov Polytechnic (1874–1879), Lwov University (1876–1877), National High Agriculture School in Dublany (near Lwov) (1878–1891) and in Agriculture Studies of Jagiellonian University (1891–1920). At the and of his life, Godlewski continued his scientific work in the agricultural research institute in Puławy. In 1920 he became director of Department of Agriculture this institute. In this time he published works in the field of agrochemistry and he prepared handbook of plant physiology published in two volumes. E. Godlewski sen. was married with Zofia Roszkowska (1848–1911), and he have three sons. Marian Godlewski (1874–1958) was a Ph.D. of medical sciences and he led privet medical practice, and he worked in Kraków hospitals, too. Emil Godlewski jun. (1875–1944) was professor of embryology and biology in Faculty of Medicine Jagiellonian University, commissioner for fight with epidemics and senator. Tadeusz Godlewski (1878–1921) was professor of physics, rector of Lwov Polytechnic. After first wife death Godlewski was married again with Stefania Godlewska.
