From the late 18th century Poles took part in the geographical exploration of Central Asia, mainly as Russian citizens. The explorers included both political exiles and soldiers, as well as officials from Russian institutions collaborating with border offices and the Russian Geographical Society. In the article the author examines issues like geographical discoveries, 19th century rivalry in the region between England and Russia, the region as a destination for political exiles escaping from Russia, and motives guiding Poles deciding to work (also doing intelligence service) for Russia.
