Niniejszy tekst ma za zadanie wprowadzić czytelnika w historyczny i współczesny kontekst toczącej się debaty dotyczącej stopni i tytułów naukowych. Po krótkim wstępie wprowadzającym, pokazującym proces ich tworzenia na przestrzeni wieków, przedstawiam polski system promocji uczonych. Przedstawiam dwa główne stanowiska ideologiczne powstałe w wyniku podniesienia interesującego mnie problemu, dzielące środowisko uczonych na obóz liberalny i konserwatywny. Uzupełniam go wątkiem o Deklaracji Bolońskiej, której zamierzeniem była reforma szkolnictwa wyższego w Europie, w tym interesującego mnie ładu akademickiego. W oparciu o artykuły zamieszczane w Internecie, przybliżam również argumentację dwóch stron jakie wyklarowały się w toku obserwacji i partycypacji w rozpatrywanym niżej problemie. Następnie przedstawiam pokrótce własne stanowisko, które nie tyle przyjmuje wartość arbitralną, co jest jednym z głosów w dyskusji. Celem artykułu jest skłonienie do refl eksji osób wiążących swoją przyszłość ze światem nauki.

This text is designed to introduce the reader to the historical and contemporary contexts of the debate which leads to academic degrees and titles. Aft er a short introduction. which shows the process of the creation of titles over the centuries, I present the Polish scholars’ promotion system. I present two main ideological positions resulting from the problem of sharing the scholars’ environment between liberal and conservative camps, which I fi nd interesting. I supplement the theme with the Bologna Declaration, whose aim was to reform higher education in Europe, including the governance of the academics. Based on articles on the Internet, I also bring the reasonongs of both sides which were clarifi ed in the course of observation and participation in the problem under consideration. I then briefl y present my position, which doesen’t take an arbitrary valuation but is just one of the voices in the discussion. The purpose of this article is to encourage people to think about their future in the world of science.
