The author compares the current situation in European Union with collapse of the USSR, which also seemed unthinkable. He considers this experience as essential for present discussions about the future of Europe. Europeans admit to feeling good about living in the EU, but simultaneously not trusting in its economic fate. The average citizen doesn’t understand EU mechanisms and cannot imagine its collapse, so they simply choose to believe in the basic competence of leaders to avoid EU decomposition. The author emphasizes the view that EU disintegration may not necessarily be caused by a victory of anti-union forces, but by searching for the golden mean in crisis.
