The article „Farce-player and the society. Contribution to the concept of woman in the two novels of Theodor Fontane” concerns the matter, how the woman of the 19 century copies with the role of spouse, what it means to her to submit to the demands of the society. That’s why she puts on a mask, she begins to play-act. The analysis of the novels shows what influence has play-acting on the heroines. The life of Effie Briest ends tragically, but Melanie from “L’adultera” succeeds in throwing away the mask and to restore herself as authentic individual.
