W artykule przedstawiono w ogólnym zarysie sylwetkę Jane Addams, znanej w Stanach Zjednoczonych aktywistki społecznej, która zapisała się na kartach historii dobroczynności USA. Koncepcja prowadzonej przez nią pracy środowiskowej w modelu Settlement, pod nazwą Hull House (działającym w Chicago), stała się na przełomie XIX i XX wieku wzorem dla wielu działaczy społecznych i inspiracją do dyskusji o roli pracy środowiskowej z imigrantami. Addams była także reformatorką społeczną, wspierała ruch sufrażystek, przyjaźniła się z Johnem Deweyem i stała się autorytetem w dziedzinie zmian w polityce społecznej. Jako pierwsza Amerykanka uzyskała Pokojową Nagrodę Nobla za swoje zaangażowanie w walkę o pokój na świecie.

The article presents briefly the well known in the United States community activist Jane Addams, who made an impact in the history of the US charity. The concept of her work conducting community development, in the model of settlement houses, called Hull House (placed in Chicago), became in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century a model for many social activists and an inspiration for discussions about the role of community work with immigrants. Addams was also a social reformer, supporting the suffrage movement. She was a friend of John Dewey, and she played an important part in social policy making of her times. As a first American woman she received the Nobel Peace Prize for her commitment to the struggle for peace in the world
