The aim of the study is twofold. First, it introduces major historical events and the circumstances under which one of the most significant literacy centres in the 12th century Paris was founded before the foundation of the university – the Abbey of St. Victor. The author also ponders the question of the existence and manner of functioning of the monastic school next to the Abbey and attempts to comment on existing information regarding the school. Secondly, the main part of the study is a biography of one of the most significant canons regular who worked in the Abbey in the 12th century – Richard of St. Victor. He was an important scholar in his time and played an important role in the boom of the Abbey at a time when the Abbey had already achieved renown. He also cultivated theology in an original manner. This part of the study aims at presenting a complex and well-organized treatise on Richard’s life, based on surviving and known historical documents. These documents will be critically assessed and, if necessary, interpreted in order to present Richard’s biography as historically accurately as possible.
