Analizując zachowania konsumentów i czynniki je kształtujące, można zauważyć dużą dynamikę ich zmian, a zatem i trudność przewidywania przyszłych tendencji. Wśród czynników tych ważną rolę pełnią dochody, ich poziom i rozkład. W ujęciu całej populacji danego kraju zmiany w poziomie dochodów gospodarstw domowych mogą istotnie wpływać na poziom globalnej konsumpcji, a w konsekwencji na dochód narodowy. Celem artykułu jest pokazanie zmian w poziomie dochodów gospodarstw domowych i ich wpływu na poziom i strukturę konsumpcji. Zarysowano tendencje na podstawie analizy dynamiki wymienionych zjawisk w Polsce oraz w przyjętych do porównań krajach europejskich: Hiszpanii, Włoszech, Bułgarii i Rumunii. Wykorzystano dane statystyczne dostępne w statystykach europejskich dotyczące m.in.: poziomu PKB na mieszkańca, rozporządzalnego dochodu netto gospodarstw domowych, struktury wydatków gospodarstw domowych na spożycie, stóp oszczędności i inwestycji oraz wskaźnika zagrożenia ubóstwem. Podjęto również próbę weryfikacji wyników przy uwzględnieniu innych determinant kształtujących spożycie. Pokazano, że wydatki konsumpcyjne są wypadkową wysokości rozporządzalnych dochodów gospodarstw domowych oraz bogactwa kraju mierzonego poziomem PKB na mieszkańca. Podkreślono, że konsumpcja jest dobrym wskaźnikiem poziomu życia. Analiza struktury wydatków gospodarstw domowych w Europie w latach 2005-2015 wskazuje, że w miarę bogacenia się społeczeństw rosną wydatki na konsumpcję produktów zaspokajających podstawowe potrzeby mieszkańców, czyli na żywność i napoje (chociaż ich udział w wydatkach ogółem maleje) oraz na utrzymanie mieszkania. Jednocześnie większą wagę przywiązuje się do produktów czy usług cechujących wysoką jakość życia. Rosną wydatki na zdrowie, edukację i ubezpieczenia. W Polsce struktura konsumpcji i tendencje zmian są inne niż obserwowane w krajach bogatych (we Włoszech i w Hiszpanii). W analizowanym okresie zmalał udział wydatków na dwie największe pozycje w budżetach gospodarstw domowych, czyli na żywność i napoje oraz na utrzymanie mieszkania, choć ich wartość nominalna wzrosła. W tym samym okresie wzrósł udział i wartość wydatków na wypoczynek i kulturę. Wzrosły także wydatki na zdrowie, na odzież i obuwie, transport, restauracje i hotele oraz ubezpieczenia.

Analysing the consumer behaviours and the factors shaping them one may notice great dynamics of changes thereof, hence, also the difficulty with anticipating future trends. Among these factors, an important role is played by incomes, their level and distribution. In terms of the entire population of a given country, changes in the level of households’ incomes may substantially affect the level of global consumption and, in effect, national income. An aim of the article is to show the changes in the level of households’ incomes and their impact on the level and pattern of consumption. The authors outlined the trends based on an analysis of the dynamics of the mentioned phenomena in Poland and in the European countries taken for comparisons: Spain, Italy, Bulgaria, and Romania. They used the statistical data accessible in European statistics concerning, inter alia, the per capita GDP level, households’ net disposable income, structure of households’ spending on consumption, savings and investment rates as well as the at-risk-of-poverty rate. The authors also made an attempt to verify findings taking into account other determinants shaping consumption. They showed that consumer spending is a product of the amount households’ disposable income and country’s wealth measured with the per capita GDP level. They emphasised that consumption is a good indicator of living standard. The analysis of the structure of households’ spending in Europe in 2005-2015 shows that as societies grow rich there grow expenses on consumption of products meeting basic needs of dwellers, i.e. food and drinks (though their share in total expenses declines) and flat maintenance. At the same time, greater attention is paid to the products or services specific to high quality of life. There grows expenses on health, education and insurance. In Poland, the consumption pattern and trends for changes are different than those observed in rich countries (Italy and Spain). In the period in question, the share of expenditure on the two biggest items in households’ budgets, i.e. on food and beverages as well as on flat maintenance declined, though their nominal value grew. On the contrary, the share and value of spending on leisure and culture grew. Expenses on health, clothes and footwear, transport, restaurants and hotels as well as on insurance also grew.
