Urodzony w Niemczech surrealista, plastyk i pisarz Hans Bellmer jest dziś najbardziej znany jako autor dwóch lalek¬¬, które powstały w Berlinie w latach 30. XX w., zachowały się też zdjęcia i teksty na ich temat. Prace te wzbudzają kontrowersje z uwagi na ich otwarcie erotyczny charakter i wyzwania, jakie stawiają widzom. Dlatego też były często krytykowane z perspektywy feministycznej. Jednak, jak udowadniam w niniejszym eseju, począwszy od zorganizowanej niedawno w Berlinie wystawy „Podwójny Sexus”, gdzie jego prace zostały wystawione obok twórczości Louise Bourgeois, wyraźnie widać, że Bellmer jest daleki od reifikowania norm płci kulturowej; wręcz przeciwnie, dekonstruuje on stabilność męskiego ego.

The German-born Surrealist artist and writer Hans Bellmer is currently most famous for the two dolls he created in Berlin during the 1930s, alongside accompanying photographs and texts. Controversial for the challenging and oftentimes sexually graphic character of his work, Bellmer has often been criticized by feminist thinkers. Beginning with the recently hosted Double Sexus exhibition in Berlin, where his work was presented alongside that of Louise Bourgeois, and then examining his doll photographs and other works, I argue that—far from reifying gender norms—Bellmer deconstructs the stability of the male ego.
