Many foreigners who know Chinese people are surprised by the fact that the Chinese express their feelings in a completely different way than the Westerners. For example, Chinese people do not hug when they meet, even if they are close family members who haven’t seen each other for a long time. Obviously kissing is even more problematic. Why is that? Is it because Chinese people do not have any feelings? Of course not. The reason originates in a few thousand years of history of the feudal society and its traditional ethical code, which still infl uences or even shapes the behavior of the contemporary Chinese. As a result Chinese people choose the conservative way to express their feelings.
