The article accentuates the origin of the idea o f “drying” buildings in Poland during the 1960s against a background of the special need for such methods. The very conception of drying was based on the premise that the main reason for dampness in the majority of buildings is the capillary upward motion of water in the walls. The authors of the presented article propose their own view concerning the mechanism of dampness in the greater part of edifices, and then assess studies on the effectiveness of various methods of drying.
