Problem piractwa morskiego postrzegany jest bardzo często przez pryzmat historii zjawiska. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie współczesnego obrazu tego rodzaju działalności przestępczej z uwzględnieniem charakterystyki transportu morskiego, historycznych uwarunkowań jego rozwoju. Opisane zostaną również miejsca szczególnie narażone na ataki, stosowane przez przestępców metody przejmowania i panowania nad statkami i wreszcie podejmowane kroki walki wypracowane przez Unię Europejską, NATO oraz inne organizacje międzynarodowe. Objętość niniejszego artykułu nie pozwala na pełny opis zjawiska. Pozwala jednak na przedstawienie podstawowych elementów problemu piractwa morskiego, które stało się stałym elementem zagrożeń dla transportu morskiego.

The problem of maritime piracy is often perceived through the history of this phenomenon. The aim of the article is to show modern image of this type of criminal activity, taking into account the characteristics of the sea transport, historical conditions of its development. There will also be described places particularly exposed to attacks, methods of taking over and controlling ships by criminals and finally measures developed by European Union, NATO and other international organizations. The volume of this article will not allow to present a full description of the phenomenon. However, it allows to show basic elements of maritime piracy problem, that has became a permanent element of threats to sea transport.
