The text discusses unconventional linguistic behavior in which members of rural social microstructure participate. On the basis of nicknames and bynames preserving the judgments of inhabitants of Zagórze and its surroundings (Chrzanów powiat) on the subject of language, one can distinguish several types of unconventional verbal acts. The rural community has judged with particular negativity attempts at dissociating oneself from the dialect while simultaneously possessing incomplete knowledge of the common variant of the language. Also considered unconventional are verbal behaviors pointing out the communicational awkwardness of village inhabitants. The linguistic data prove that the community depicted expects skillful establishment of linguistic contacts from its members. The requirements of convention are also visible in promoting a certain way of naming a person’s partner. Those most subject to criticism are rural residents who violate the norm of correctness. Some nicknames reflect as well the inhabitants’ linguistic incompetence on the subject of the meaning of lexemes or the proper context of their use.
