The main aim of the article is to follow the academic careers of Polish Orientalists who came from what is now Belarus when it was part of the Russian Empire (19th century–early 20th century). In many cases they were associated with the University of Vilnius (1803–1832) and contributed to the founding of Oriental studies centres at universities in Kazan and Petersburg as well as entire new disciplines — Mongolian studies (Józef Kowalewski) or Kurdish studies (August Żaba). The Polish scholars paid particular attention to the languages and cultures of Siberia. In addition, the author of the article examines the fate of Polish scholars from Belarus after 1918 and their careers at Polish universities.
