The literature on art valuation is dominated by the view that artworks are evaluated primarily in terms of their history, their current value stemming from previous assessments, interpretations, and the artist’s position in the artistic field. This raises the question: how does the valuation process unfold for pieces of art without a clear past (i.e. new artworks, often still unfinished, created by young and relatively unknown artists)? Drawing on pragmatic sociology, I argue that such works of art are valuated primarily based on their potential – what they might become in the future. Based on extensive research on art valuation conducted in Poland and the United States, I demonstrate how the inherent uncertainty of the unknown future is reduced through practices and devices that, first, shape and align expectations about the future and, second, bind the future to the present.
