The paper presents differences and similarities of the economic programmes presented by candidates running for the offi ce of the Mayor of Szczecin in 2010. The study tries to answer the question which principles of the candidates’ economic policies were important and whether or not the principles could have increased the number of their voters. The economic programmes of the candidates running for the offi ce of the mayor of Szczecin presented the city’s priorities and needs. The implementation of the programmes was supposed to be instrumental for the city’s development and therefore was supposed to change the image of Szczecin in comparison with other Polish towns. The candidates’ electoral programmes mostly concerned the economic development of the city, improving its road infrastructure, revitalising apartment blocks, building sports and cultural centres and sea economy. Piotr Krzystek, the incumbent mayor of Szczecin, was a candidate with a very realistic chance of winning. The electoral programme presented by the candidate and particularly its economic part was a continuation of his current policies. The most important elements of Piotr Krzystek’s economic programme were similar or close to those presented by his main rival, Arkadiusz Litwiński. This has greatly affected the fi nal outcome of the election.
