This year marks the forty fifth anniversary of the first issue of our periodical. Upon this occasion it seems worthwhile to recall that the initiative of publishing „Ochrona Zabytkow", a periodical devoted to the protection and conservation of historical monuments, was made in 1948 by the Main Board of the Trade Union of Historians of Art and Culture together with the Head Office of Museums and the Protection of Historical Relics. The first editor was professor Jozef Dutkiewicz who held this post uninterruptedly for two decades until his death on 7 September 1968. He was followed by professor Władysław Ślesiński (1968-1973) and professor Olgierd Czerner (1973-1974), while for the last sixteen years the editing board was headed by professor Lech Krzyżanowski (1975-1991). „Ochrona Zabytkow", a quarterly, followed the example of a specialist publication entitled „Ochrona Zabytkow Sztuki" which was initiated in the pre-war period by professor Jerzy Remer and which dealt both with the protection of relics and conservation discoveries as well as inventories and the geography of historical monuments in Poland. The pioneers and authors of the post-war „Ochrona Zabytkow" have chosen as their prime task a systematic presentation, to specialists and admirers of relics of the past, of the most significant and topical issues as regards the protection of historical monuments, and the provision o f information about the work performed by conservation agencies, the planned and realized undertakings as well as the most recent scientific discoveries. In time and in accordance with the progress o f conservation theory and praxis in Poland and in the world, the range of published material was considerably expanded and now includes i.a. conservation theory, methodology, technology, legislative issues as well as a survey of the contents of foreign specialist periodicals and reviews o f more prominent books concerning the protection and conservation of historical monuments. The editing and make-up also underwent a number of changes (nota bene, not always most fortunate) dictated, as a rule, by altering economic conditions and our printing facilities. The present editorial board o f „Ochrona Zabytkow" appreciates the past accomplishments and, keeping in mind the further development of our periodical, plans to expand and vary its contents and to improve its make-up. We wish to pay much more attention to material concerning the history of Polish conservation, and the protection and conservation of Polish monuments abroad, and to include studies dealing with a professional assesment of various types o f contemporary undertakings conducted in conditions determined by the new socio-economic situation in Poland. The editors also intend to introduce polemics and discussions on topics connected with broadly comprehended conservation, including issues of an aesthetic, technical, methodological and legal nature. Finally, the editors aim to make the p e rio d ic a l available to advertisements o f different firms which specialize in conservation and which introduce onto our market new materials and technologies, applicable in conservation work. The anniversary issue is a first step towards an improved make-up which, we hope, will bring us closer to European standards with which our readers are already familiar. We also hope that the above presented plans of the editorial board and the new appearance of our periodical will meet with a favourable response and win the approval of our readers and the authors coworking with us.
