The paper discusses the origin of the Lessons Learned System in the armed forces of many countries, especially its role and functions during the performing of tasks by both the Special Forces Component Command and the Special Forces Units of the Polish Armed Forces. It examines the tools developed by the Lessons Learned System personnel in order to collect information during military service and exercises. The paper is meant to provide impetus for the research into the significance and effectiveness of the Special Forces from the angle of the Lessons Learned System, and for the enhancement of a deeper operational awareness, development trends, as well as the necessary changes in the doctrine documents of the Polish Armed Forces. The paper is devoted to the soldiers of the Special Forces who were killed in action during military service in Afghanistan.
