Abstracts
Despite the growing interest in ephemera, dailies are yet to be studied in great details. The Polona Digital Library has in its ephemera collection of 1288 dailies, including about 50 Jewish dailies. Jewish sport in Poland has a rich history which began in 1896 with the founding of the Jewish Gymnastic Society in Bielsk Śląski and several years later — of similar societies in Lviv. 1930 was marked by the establishment of the Polish division of the Maccabi World Union fostering physical and spiritual revival of the Jews. Six years later it had 150 clubs with over 200,000 members. The ideological background of Jewish sport — associated with the building of aseparate national identity, cultivation of tradition and physical strengthening — was reflected in many articles published in dailies of Jewish sports clubs; this was also evidenced by the fact that some excerpts were published in Hebrew.
