Релігієзнавство як комплекс наукових досліджень, зосереджених на природі та формах виникнення, функціювання та взаємодії релігій у різних контекстах (в тому числі соціальному, культурному, політичному та ін.) виникло в Європі в другій половині ХІХ століття. Для наукової дисципліни це відносно молодий вік, що передбачає свої особливості, зокрема процеси становлення, інституціалізації та самовизначення. На теренах колишнього Радянського Союзу ця проблема має окрему специфіку: історичні умови ідеологічної організації соціуму залишили потужний відбиток, наслідки якого можна використовувати з різним успіхом. Звісно, нашому читачеві (щонайменш як платникові податків) більш цікаво дізнатися про «наш», наближений контекст того, чим і як саме займаються релігієзнавці та кому і для чого це потрібно. Однак для глибшого розуміння спільного та відмінного у релігієзнавчій традиції ми звернулися із проханням долучитися до нашого віртуального круглого столу не лише колеґ з України, Росії та Білорусі, але й представників європейського наукового співтовариства.

There is presented a live discourse formed by real people – the makers of the modern science of religion. The discussion relates to the following subjects: status of religious studies in the modern world; the influence of philosophy on modern religious studies; method problem; selfidentification of a “scholar of religion”; the most prominent personalities of the modern religious studies; the role of religious studies in society; urgent “trends”, most discussed themes in the study of religion; idea of the existence of confessional or theological religious studies; and future development of religious studies. The answers give a rather clear idea of the essence and ways of the contemporary religious studies, what are their objective and subjective problems, what is the vector of their development, and – the most important for the modern pragmatic thinking – what are their applied sense and their actual and desirable role in the modern world.
