This article shows, in a historical approach, trends concerning the development of housing complexes, as well as related definitions and views expressed by the circles of architects, urban planners, sociologists, as well as users (dwellers). The author draws attention to the need for approaching housing estates in the context of seeking possibilities for the fulfilment of sustainable development criteria.
