The purpose of the article is to present the effects of the 2008–2009 fi nancial crisis for the European economy. The author discusses the main causes of the crisis, its impact on the financial sector and the real economy. Analysis of the basic macroeconomic indicators leads to a conclusion that despite fi rm actions taken by individual countries, until now it has not been possible to restore the dynamic of the economies from before 2008.
