The article presents the concept of social productivity of universities elaborated within the preparation of PhD thesis entitled "Social productivity of universities - new concept of teaching productivity". The process of constructing social productivity model was based on the reconstruction of theoretical concept present in the consciousness of social representatives and universities. This theoretical concept, rooted in dominant ideologies, indicates major expected functions of universities and shows the way these functions should be performed. Simplifying the problem, it may be said that in the European, Polish or regional documents and academic debate there is a model, although not always consistent, of relations between university activities and expected results of the activities ( so-called "causal vision of institution activities"). In the paper the author used worked-out methodology for reconstructing objectives which assumes a multistage process of reconstructing them (taking into account both imposed objectives, mostly codified in standard documents, and the objectives functioning only in decision-makers’ consciousness). The reconstruction of objectives was carried out allowing for various perspectives: historical, theoretical, strategic and critical (showing the opinions of examined experts on functioning of the sector). The purpose of the article is to present the methodology of work on the concept of functioning of an institution (objectives analysis) - such a concept frequently becomes the first step in the evaluation process of functioning of the sector. Another aim is to exemplify the way the reconstruction of objectives could be done. The discussed model was reconstructed based on Polish and European documents designating future trends in academic sector. Subsequently it was supplemented by the concept of functioning of academic institutions, analyzed during in-depth interviews with the representatives of authorities, enterprises and academic sector.
