Prezentowany artykuł traktuje o arcyksięciu Ferdynandzie Maksymilianie Habsburgu (1832-1867), cesarzu Meksyku (1864-1867) i jego żonie Karolinie Amelii Koburg w ujęciu ich wzajemnych relacji jako małżonków oraz jako osób będących przy władzy. W oparciu o korespondencję prywatną tej pary prowadzoną w latach 1859-1867 oraz o inne źródła z epoki autor stara się odpowiedzieć na pytanie, co tak naprawdę łączyło Karolinę i Maksymiliana? Co było najistotniejsze w ich związku: miłość do siebie, władza (jej posiadanie i sprawowanie) czy może jedno i drugie? Poznajemy Maksymiliana i Karolinę od strony ich osobowości, wykształcenia oraz kompetencji w zakresie polityki, dyplomacji i umiejętności kierowania sprawami państwa. Chociaż, z niewiadomych przyczyn, małżonkowie stronili od intymnych relacji i nie doczekali się wspólnego potomstwa, okazywali sobie wiele czułości, wzajemnej troski i potrafili łączyć miłość do siebie z miłością do władzy.

The article deals with the Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian Habsburg (1832-1867), Emperor of Mexico (1864-1867) and his wife Amelia Carolina Coburg in terms of their relationship as spouses and as persons who are at power. Based on private correspondence of this couple, kept in between 1859- 1867, and other sources from the era, author tries to answer the question of what really connected Caroline and Maximilian. What was the most important in their relationship: love for each other, the power (its possession and exercise), or perhaps both things? We get to know Maximilian and Caroline from the side of their personality, education, and competence in the field of politics, diplomacy and the ability to manage the affairs of the state. Although, for unknown reasons, the couple abstained from intimate relationships and did not see the common offspring, showed a lot of affection, mutual concern and could combine the love for each other with the love of power.
